No Ghosting in Business: Build Stronger Relationships | Ruth Klein
There's No Ghosting in Business
We've all heard the unforgettable line from A League of Their Own:
"There's no crying in baseball."
Every time I hear it, I smile.

Lately, though, I've found myself thinking about a different version.
There's no ghosting in business.
It may sound simple, but it's become one of the greatest missed opportunities I see among entrepreneurs, authors, executives, and thought leaders.
Someone expresses interest.
You have an engaging conversation.
Ideas are exchanged.
Possibilities begin to unfold.
Then...
Silence.
No email.
No phone call.
No follow-up.
No response.
We've all experienced it.
If I'm being completely honest, I've been on both sides of it over the years.
And every time it happens, I'm reminded of something one of my mentors shared with me many years ago.
"Your follow-up is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars."
At the time, I thought they were talking about sales.
Now I understand they were talking about relationships.
Follow-Up Is an Act of Respect
Many people think follow-up is about persistence.
Or convincing someone.
Or "checking in."
I see it differently.

Follow-up is about honoring a relationship.
It's a way of saying:
"I remember you."
"Our conversation mattered."
"I meant what I said."
Integrity is rarely built in the first meeting.
It's built in what happens afterward.
When you follow through.
When you keep your word.
When you continue a conversation instead of allowing it to quietly disappear.
The Biggest Opportunities Rarely Happen First
Looking back over my career, some of the most meaningful opportunities didn't come from an introduction.
They came from what happened after the introduction.
A second conversation.
A thoughtful email.
A handwritten note.
A reconnect months later.
Visibility isn't simply about getting in front of people.
It's about staying connected to the relationships you've already created.
One thoughtful follow-up can lead to:
A speaking engagement.
A publishing opportunity.
A strategic partnership.
A lifelong client.
Or a friendship you never expected.
Stop Waiting for Permission
I often hear authors say they've been ghosted by literary agents.
Entrepreneurs tell me podcast hosts never replied.
Speakers assume event organizers simply weren't interested.
Maybe.
But maybe not.
Sometimes inboxes overflow.
Sometimes timing isn't right.
Sometimes people genuinely intend to respond and simply don't.
One thoughtful follow-up can reopen a conversation that never actually ended.
The people who create extraordinary opportunities understand this.
They don't chase.
They reconnect.
Relationships Build Careers
Business has never been only about strategy.
It's about people.
Every email.
Every phone call.
Every conversation.
Every follow-up.
Each one is an opportunity to deepen trust.
To build credibility.
To demonstrate integrity.
The question isn't whether someone will remember your first conversation.
The question is whether you'll care enough to continue it.
Because sometimes the difference between a missed opportunity and a life-changing one is simply this:
You followed up.
